HOUSE: Newburgh

Clean slate (dirt, plywood).

My mother and I spent a couple of hours clearing out all of the remaining weeds and grass in the garden. I feel so inspired! She also helped me to come up with a pretty great new design for the landscaping, and I’m going to try to break it down into stages so we can move forward with the whole thing at a manageable pace.

Oh! And I think we have a new tile guy, which is very exiting. Evan and B spent the weekend rebuilding the subfloor (and the sub-subfloor) in the bathroom, so things are moving right along…

Potential-wise, that is the most exciting back yard I have seen in a very long time.

When can we see the plan for the garden?

Adam: Tile #1 was weird about calling, weird about scheduling, weird about the whole thing in general. Bad vibes/no vibes…

Vicki: The plan is only on paper now. I have to either recreate it in Illustrator or scan the sketch…

yoy, im about to do the same thing with my yard and i’m not looking forward to it! all of last summer’s sod died, so i’m raking and tilling and starting over.

i was recently inspired by two different kinds of Asian grasses, one functional, one decorative. i want to use Korean grass on the lawn (rolly and mole-y!) and Japanese forest grass in the beds around the edge…

can’t wait to see the progress of yours!

and how lucky you are that you have your mom so close to help with these things.

Oh, that’s what my backyard looks like now too! I can’t wait to see what you do with yours.

take lots of pictures of the bathroom tiling process please? Are you putting tile up the walls too, or only on the floor? I’m curious as to how you attach the cement board to the exterior wall. I see you have some framing or maybe furring strips under the window. I haven’t taken down the plaster and plastic tile yet to see what is around my tub.

  • Reply Anna at D16 May 8, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Ryan, the tile is only going on the floor. The walls are beadboard. We’re not doing the tiling ourselves, so the photo sequence won’t be very extensive, sorry!

The wood strips you see on the exterior wall are the furring strips that the original lath was nailed to. We had to knock it all out so we can insulate under the window and build supports for our wall-mounted radiator. The beadboard will be nailed onto the furring strips, just as we did it around the rest of the room.

Can I ask if you ground is level? The back of my yard slopes off and it’s making landscaping really hard. I might just close it off with some big Butterfly Bushes.
