I Love the Internet + Life + Health

Not your Homie.

Regretfully, I have requested that Door Sixteen be removed from the running in The Homies at Apartment Therapy. Hopefully my request will be honored soon.

What should have been a fun contest has become a forum for commenters to criticize the finalists with a harshness that takes anything positive out of the competition. That’s not how I want to start a new year. There’s no point.

I truly hope that the winner doesn’t wind up on the receiving end of a bunch of nastiness, but I fear that is what will happen.

Thank you to those of you who took the time to vote for me. It is greatly appreciated, and I am endlessly amazed that so many people choose to come here every day to see what I’ve got going on in my house.

    Oh phooey.
I haven’t read any of the comments, but good for you for making a statement in support of positivity.

I’m sending happy thoughts to you, the puppies and that back room 🙂

    Long live doorsixteen!

  • Reply Jenna January 2, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Won’t be voting in that contest. I think you did the right thing.

And, PS, I love your blog just as it is.

  • Reply Tanya January 2, 2009 at 9:44 pm

It’s really sad that the comments took a nasty turn. But I’m glad you were nominated in the first place or I wouldn’t have learned about your awesome blog. Just do what you wanna do and have a happy new year.

  • Reply anne January 2, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Just wanted to say I love your blog.

  • Reply DawnMarie January 2, 2009 at 9:52 pm

I have seen what is going on at AT. I am sorry that it has come to that. I thought with adults voting it would not amount to name calling and nasty behavior. As is always displayed in your blog, you are a classy lady. Good for you for standing up for yourself and not allowing the negative bahvior to be a part of your life.

  • Reply faroutbrusselsprout January 2, 2009 at 9:52 pm

I too have not yet read the comments (but I will now!). Good on you for negative-vibe busting.

I personally love all the sites up for nomination so it’s hard to pick just one. If someone doesn’t like what’s on offer then…don’t read it!

  • Reply Michelle January 2, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Yowza. The ATers are always a tough crowd. You’re still the winner in my book.

  • Reply Allison January 2, 2009 at 9:57 pm

Humph. I haven’t read the comments, and I already voted for you (but good for you for withdrawing). I am constantly surprised at the negativity that emerges in blog comments.

Anyway, your blog rocks. What’s funny is that I am 35 years old and my 70 year old mom introduced me to Door 16. So much for thinking *I* was cool!

    Happy new year!

  • Reply Jan' camera January 2, 2009 at 9:58 pm

Sorry to hear that you are withdrawing but I think it’s great that you are doing that. I don’t normally go to A.T. so I didn’t read any of the comments, but I did visit the site to vote for you. Happy New Year to you all.

  • Reply Laura January 2, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Anna, How sad that you would withdraw D16 from The Homies! After seeing your post, I scrolled through all the nominations, and I didn’t see a single negative comment. (The nominations for D16 were particularly positive.) If you found unpleasant comments somewhere else, I say it’s all the more reason to stay in the running. Obviously, you and I are strangers, with very little in common (not even decorating style!), yet your blog has so often given me a moment of brightness, even on the most dreary days. Did you notice how many nominators commented on your humor and spirit? You’re a terrific young woman, doing a fantastic job bringing an old house back to life. Thank you for sharing your experience in such an intelligent and inspiring way. And remember: Illegitimi non carborundum est.

  • Reply katherine January 2, 2009 at 10:05 pm

I totally respect your decision. I haven’t read the comments, but think I can see what you are talking about. It’s weird to me how much “competition” goes along with community. Your blog is awesome…I hope the mess doesn’t discourage you from posting.

  • Reply margot January 2, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Aw, man what a bummer. Here’s to hoping the negativity doesn’t get you down and to being even more inspired to keep at it. Cheers, and keep it up!

Sorry to hear that you will be withdrawing from the contest. Your blog is so wonderful. I love reading about your home renovations and the photos of your adorable dogs always brings a smile to my face. I don’t normally visit the A.T. site so I have not read any of the comments. I did vote for you, however. Keep up the good work and Happy New Year to you all.

  • Reply Janet January 2, 2009 at 10:14 pm

eek. Don’t let the jerks drag you down. Unfortunately, there are always a few out there.

I’m a fairly new recruit, but don’t forget you’ve earned your nomination!

  • Reply lk January 2, 2009 at 10:23 pm

I just wanted to say… I’ve been reading your blog or a few weeks now and its quickly become one of my favorites. Your renovations are so inspiring, and I love the bits of personality injected into the blog. You seem like you would be really fun to get to know.

Some of those other blogs that people are gushing about over there… they have no personality. There’s pretty to look at, but if I can’t identify with the author on any level, or if they’re so personality-less that I can’t tell what blog it is in my reader without looking for the name, I’m not going to get that excited when there’s a new post.

I guess this is all just a long, round-about way of saying I love your blog. Keep it up! 🙂

  • Reply Alexis January 2, 2009 at 10:27 pm

I am sorry that you withdrew your name from consideration, however, after reading the comments I can understand why. It is a real shame that a few people have to ruin it for everyone else. What ever happened to the old saying “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”?

  • Reply Shelly January 2, 2009 at 10:36 pm

    Anna,
I to am sad you have with drawn from The Homies.I believe you have earned the right to be there! I absolutely LOVE your blog, I read it every day! To me you are an inspiration! You have an amazing sense of humor and seem like such a free spirit. I love your sense of style whether it’s Fashion, Decor or Makeup! And your dogs are just the cutest! I to, have read what is going on at AT, it is very unfortunate grown adults have to act in such a distasteful manner! Chin up! I am very proud of you for standing up for what you believe in! It’s very admirable AND classy! Have a wonderful 2009. I can’t WAIT to read about it.

I really enjoy your blog, and it saddens me to see this commenting nastiness going on at the other website.

I’ve seen this happen in other blogs I read, too: some of the most pleasant, inoffensive, non-controversial blogs out there have been invaded by vicious anonymous commentators. It ruins it for everyone.

  • Reply kellyr January 2, 2009 at 10:55 pm

I too just wanted to say thanks and show my appreciation of your blog as a home design resource (and more!).

As someone that’s been working on and off for the last 3 years on my own old house I guess it makes me feel better to know there is someone else out there that might also have spent weeks stripping and refinishing one section of one room only to then paint it back and put in modern furniture (although most of my stuff is friend and family cast-offs currently.)

Also, love your new haircut and the cute dogs- i mean it is almost as if you’re a real person.

I read the comments and didn’t see any negative remarks, either. Maybe a little thicker skin next time?

  • Reply YellowGoat January 2, 2009 at 11:55 pm

Well, I’m a causal subscriber and majorly looking for inspiration here and there, then I read about this post. I read all the comments and see what the fuss is about.

I think for you to opt out for this competition thingy is kind of sad. You should have just ignore the negative comments. I know how hard people work on certain thing and feel really dearly about it and feel mad when random people give out some not so positive comments.

I think you tried too hard to defend yourself. If you liken some comments, thank them, and take the constructive criticism. If you don’t like some of the comments, thank them also, but say nothing beyond that. Writing long defensive comment back is never a good idea, it just puts you under a bad light. The more you defend, the more the other commenter is going to attack you, then you withdraw the whole thing, make them think they win.

I was once in such position in a public forum, I thought I was serving people by posting a bad experience, then all the people point at me and think of me as a bitch because they’re fans of the company I had fuel with. They even call me chicken because I didn’t respond. I respond, and that just lead to a whole other brew of negative comments, I was kind of mad for a couple weeks, then my husband said, why bother wasting time and emotions with these people, they don’t even know you, then I realize I was so work up I forgot what more important in life – to be happy.

Sometimes, you just need to let go of how some strangers perceive of you or your work. You have enough people like your blog, that’s what counts. People who don’t like it, let them be. No need to feel bad about it. No one can please the whole world.

    That’s my 2 cents.

I hope you’re feeling better now.

And hey, a hundred bucks is a hundred bucks and judging for the result so far, you have your chance to win it.

  • Reply amymezzell January 2, 2009 at 11:56 pm

I am not sure I’ve commented on your blog before, but I read it ever day and enjoy it. You’re subscribed to in my Bloglines! I just want to say I am proud of how you’ve handled the contest, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with your blog. I hate it for everyone involved, but jerks do tend to ruin it for everyone sometimes. Keep up the good work!

  • Reply Amanda January 3, 2009 at 12:10 am

Ah, what a shame. I voted for you (I’m littleinkpot :P) but I totally understand. I find the comments on AT generally quite judgmental. The whole negativity thing is what stops me from doing a blog on my own home renos.

Anyway, keep up the great work! As a fellow graphic designer specializing in book cover design who owns two dogs and is renovating their home and can’t go past a great chair, I think you’re fantastic!

  • Reply erin@designcrisis January 3, 2009 at 12:15 am

Oh bummer! I enjoy reading Apartment Therapy’s posts, but I frequently feel that the community of readers/commenters takes on a toxic vibe. We don’t all have to agree (far from it!), but we don’t have to be needlessly cruel, either.

  • Reply MMW January 3, 2009 at 12:20 am

How sad that people have to be that way, it seems like they are just searching for negative things to say. Anna, I’m proud of you for standing up and saying that this type of negativity is not something you want to be a part of. That is one of the reasons why I have so much respect for you and consider you such a good friend.

  • Reply Amy January 3, 2009 at 12:56 am

Wow, I can’t believe the AT thing spun so out of control. I never pay attention to comments made to me by strangers speaking behind their computer screens. Which is why you can totally choose to ignore me saying that I adore your blog (mascara and pooch posts and all). Keep up the great work. A family friend once told me, “Don’t let the buggers get you down.”

good on you for standing up for positivity.

  • Reply Jessica January 3, 2009 at 1:19 am

    Anna,
I just read the comments at AT. Thanks for standing up to those people. Although I love AT, the commenting sections especially for contests gets really out of control. I hate that there are people out there with nothing better to do than to be negative. I enjoy your blog, it is on my daily reading list, including the posts about your haircut and your adorable dogs. I think most people read our blogs because we are interested in seeing snippets of other people’s lives. Like you said there are tons of things that influence home design. It is great to see the whole reasoning behind decisions. Thanks for letting us peak into your life. Please continue to do what you do.

I’ve been following the comments. For the most part, they’re okay, but some are just unnecessary.

I’m sure a few select from AT will see our words of encouragement as “fawning” — there’s no winning with some. Good for you for having conviction and letting something go that could’ve turned ugly.

  • Reply Anne (in Reno) January 3, 2009 at 1:27 am

Bah. That’s why I gave up reading AT. You deserve an award for you excellent writing and photography and I love to check your blog every day. That you don’t fit the commenters’ imaginary “criteria” is their loss, not yours. That they would compare a giant home-themed blog to a personal blog like yours or Making it Lovely is also them missing the point. Safe to say, I’d rather read your writing than AT any day.

  • Reply mara January 3, 2009 at 1:30 am

Unfortunately, I stopped reading AT months ago because of those same sort of comments. It took all the joy out of it. I’m sorry that it got so bad that you did not want to be associated with the contest. They really need to do something about that, and not just during their contests.

  • Reply maude January 3, 2009 at 2:05 am

I’ve been reading Doorsixteen for a few months now and I love it. I voted for you when voting first started on AT so I haven’t read the comments but I just wanted to say good for you for withdrawing. I like looking through AT but I try not to read the comments because a lot of them have been very cruel and snarky. I didn’t think AT was rate my photo. Jeez!

  • Reply Keir January 3, 2009 at 2:14 am

No!!!! You fed the AT trolls!

I remember during the election I’d read comments on the political blogs that would make my blood boil, but then I’d take a deep breath and realize that these folks were not worth the time it took to type a comment. My advice–if you’re going to read the comments, decide beforehand that you won’t respond, no matter how tempting. These people have nothing better to do than get in a [urinating] match.

And they’re wrong–the personal stuff is frequently what makes a blog most compelling. (At least to me.) More puppies and makeup, I say! You have a great blog.

Why do others waste their time making such comments…What brings me back to your blog time after time is the uplifting and inspiring nature of your posts. So whilst is is very annoying that you had to withdraw from the Homies, it doesn’t surprise me that you took such a stand against negativity. Bring on a positive and peaceful 2009 for us all.

well i’m sorry to hear that you have taken those comments so badly. in all honestly i took a look and saw only one that could be considered offensive – and only slightly! aren’t we all being a little sensitive? can’t everyone just be proud of what they do and take the good with the bad? I hate it when forums, blogs etc become places of backslapping and praise and when the slightest bit of criticism (and most of it was actually quite constructive – as a good blogger you should be taking on board anything you can to make your blog as good as it can be, surely?) they run and hide? you’re blog is wonderful and i’ll continue to read it every day i just think that people need to relax a bit.

It’s not rocket science, if people don’t like it, why do they read it?!

Good on you for withdrawing Anna, I really admire your strength of character. I love your blog, and looking at the other comments made here – there are plenty of good (happy! positive!) people out there who love it too.

I really dislike one of the nominees, and love or like all the others, but I refrained from posting my thoughts about the one I don’t like, because what’s the point of that? Besides, what makes me dislike is that I feel it is incredibly self-absorbed (even for a blog) and that may just be my perception, you know?

In any event, I’m sorry that things got ugly. I don’t know where people get the idea that a home-related blog is going to be some in-depth, hard-hitting Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalism. It’s a BLOG, which means it’s about what interests the writer and the readers who choose to follow it. You can’t necessarily visit a blog once and get the feel of everything that’s on it. I check out blogs a few times before I write them off.

By the way, I voted for you, and I enjoy the variety of your posts.

    Have a great 2009 🙂

  • Reply Rebee January 3, 2009 at 9:59 am

What can I say? People get a tiny bit of anonymity and an audience and that’s it – they go crazy. I read the comments and they are definitely out of line. Then they defend themselves by saying they’re not being negative, they’re being honest, and that you can’t take criticism which is just extremely rude in general. I’ve seen their types before all over the Internet – they make people terrified of creating blogs or networking with people they don’t know. They’re the worst kind of presence on the Internet (or in real life, too, for that matter) – Mill calls it social tyranny, which is where they make you feel bad about what you believe in or support in a self-righteous way.

As you can see from here AND a lot of the comments on Apartment Therapy, you have a lot of people who find that kind of behavior ridiculous. And we all love your blog! I would never want you to change up what you blog about in the least – your blog feels personal and blog-like because you talk about things other than your house. There’s no reasoning with cynics like them – next time, if I were you, I’d honestly just ignore them. They’re not worth it!

  • Reply Elle January 3, 2009 at 10:06 am

Some people really are far too negative and critical. I hope that you haven’t let all of that rubbish phase you and please don’t change your style. I love that you mix in your personal life with your design thoughts and renovations. To be honest, this is the only design blog that I have found so far that has struck a cord with me because we, as readers get to understand your personality as well as your design ideas. I’m a new reader and I won’t be going away for a long time!

Hey, AT is how I found your blog, and have loved it. I am sorry the competition turned south for you. I still will be watching for your blog daily.

  • Reply Betsy January 3, 2009 at 10:48 am

I don’t like that about a lot of the AT commenters either- I think they suck a lot out of the the spirit of individuality… They had a post a few months ago asking readers to submit what they had done to make their home and lifestyle more environmentally friendly and a woman submitted photos of her home which certainly was not the most stylish home but she had made a lot of changes to it to make it more eco friendly and you could tell she was very proud of what she had done and a lot of the commenters totally ripped into her. That post and a another post asking about your favorite candle scent (its a CANDLE, people…)has kinda turned me off of AT.

  • Reply Griffo January 3, 2009 at 10:55 am

    Good for you Anna!!!

It really has got out of order over at AT and I admire you for withdrawing from the competition and all the negativity and vindictiveness that has come with it.

I have been on the receiving end of malicious comments on my blog, so much so that I have had to resort to moderating them which I really didn’t want to do.
Just yesterday I had a nasty comment about my Christmas tree pics saying that they were technically awful, WTF!!!
We can all say we like or dislike something but why get so personal??

Keep blogging, I for one love it!

    Happy New Year to you!!!

    Anna:
Sorry to hear about this. I have beena reader of your blog for quite some time now. I registered at AT awhile ago, but have never commented because if the abundance of nasty comments like the ones you have experienced. I decided to not join in their game a long time ago. I noticed that one of the commenters who spewed some venom at you has pretty much only posted negative comments when on the site so you might want to take that to heart. I have always loved reading your blog. Keep up the good work.

  • Reply Shelly January 3, 2009 at 11:00 am

Anna, I know I have already posted my opinion, but I went back to AT after reading some more of the comments on your blog. I am disgusted!! How did something so innocent turn into something so ugly? And where is AT while all this is going on. I will be removing them from my blog list A.S.A.P. Where have all the good people gone? One of the reasons I love your blog is because I can tell your a REAL person, with a real family, doing REAL people things to her home. That’s what I love about it. For me, when I blog it’s like I am keeping a sort of journal. A way of keeping a record of things I love, things I’m doing or things I want to do. In no way is it ever intended to be anything else. Just something I do for me and maybe a chance to meet new people with new ideas. (Although, I’m not sure about the meeting new people anymore. There are some really mean people out there!!) I just hope in the end you don’t take any of the negativity to heart! Please keep up the good work, for all the bloggers who love you. And for all those who don’t. Well, all I can say by reading some of their comments on AT is that they apparently wouldn’t know taste or class if it bit them in the butt! Because, seriously the comments on there make my skin crawl!! They should be ashamed of them selves!! I honestly don’t know how they can sleep at night!

  • Reply just me January 3, 2009 at 11:26 am

I never read the comments on AT, but I did today because of your post. Such a shame, especially since it seems that only 2 commenters were involved in the flame throwing. I respect your decision to respond to the negativity, but what a waste of your energy. You did not need to defend yourself, those of us who read your blog (even those of us who have never left a comment before, like me…) know of your integrity. Your ideas and thoughts about your home, family, life and dogs are what keeps me coming back every day to see what you are up to…hope this dumb fracas does not dampen your Happy New Year.

  • Reply theonly January 3, 2009 at 12:24 pm

I too voted for you but think it was wise to withdraw. A-T is such a forum for negativity that I almost never read the comments on anything. In fact, I think it’s pretty remarkable (and to your great credit) that you managed to escape the house tour more or less unscathed!

And with the idea of moving on to more positive things, I wondered if I could ask your scavenging advice. I found this sofa on Craigslist for $400.
    http://picasaweb.google.com/theonlygirl300/UntitledAlbum?feat=directlink#5287118048725948706

I’d be replacing an IKEA Nikkala sofa with a slipcover, and my thought was that I could get it recovered in a gray linen-type fabric. I like that the seat and back cushions would still be washable. I also like that it’s nice and long, with cute legs. but with the spring repair and the upholstery repair, do you think it would be worth it?

    Hi Anna ,
so so sorry that a few negative mere mortals have sucked the good out of, what should of been, a fun competition !

My god they really have little to be doing if they feel the necessity to berate you and others who blog, just because the design mojo in you compels you to do so !!

i love your blog !! thanks for all your hard work!! ed

Hi Anna, I’m sorry you had such a negative experience with that. You work so hard on your home, and it is a pleasure to come here (to your blog) and witness that. I appreciate your blog a lot, especially as a fellow creative soul.

It goes to show that the old adage of money not being able to buy you class is true, true, true. Thanks for being a good example of a class act! 🙂

  • Reply fab January 3, 2009 at 1:12 pm

I totally agree with you, Anna.

And come on, we’re talking about home design blogs, and some AT trolls expect philosophico-existential debates.

  • Reply Susan January 3, 2009 at 1:18 pm

Ugh, AT posters really are negative. You’d think the people who gave commentary on every blog nominated were voting for Oscars or something. Fact is, you are documenting your life, your style, your lifestyle, in a personal way and not for profit at all, being an ad-free blog. You’re a huge inspiration for people who want to one day tackle some reno or design projects. You share your process and passions and inspirations. That’s all valid and it’s why those of us who come here, come here. If some people want the web to be an extension of Dwell magazine (super-high production values, high concept, ads for stuff most people can’t afford), well, they’re missing out on enjoying what the web is really about: voyeurism. And you’ve given us all an excellent peek under the covers of your life.

I personally think about what will happen when one day, you finish your projects and declare your house (and blog) done. Ack, what will I read next?

You’re at the top of my Favorites links, and there you will stay.

  • Reply Patrice January 3, 2009 at 1:19 pm

I had read some of the comments on Apartment Therapy and thought if you can’t say anything nice why say anything at all! Love the dogs – Fritz is so photogenic!

and p.s. – Theonly – that couch is fabulous! The lines are sublime. I’d try to talk the owner down a bit, though. But if you love it and it’s what you’ve been looking for, get it at its price. In my experience, a good looking sofa is hard to come by on Craig’s list.

    Wow. I’d by it.

Slip cover it for a bit, then save up to have it reupholstered.

I just found out about your website from Apt Therapy. I liked your blog the best out of all the others and I voted for you. I honestly did not even read any of the comments, but I do know that a lot of people who post on AT tend to try to find the negative in everything, so I really wouldn’t take it personal. I’m glad you were in the contest because I’m going to read your blog every day now 🙂

only a first time visitor, but big time supporter of your position. i like the home design blogs. they’re fun. a respite from the harsher realities of life. i don’t know why some people feel the need to be so small-minded and mean … what a silly way to live.

BTW: Ive bookmarked your blog and promise to visit often. 😉

Like many of the comments previous to this one, I am sorry you had to, but glad you made the decision to drop out of the running. I don’t usually read comments anyway, which I’m beginning to think is a smart move.

I just wanted to say that while it was negative in the comments section, I was glad that you were nominated otherwise it would’ve taken me a bit longer to find your blog.

  • Reply MODsquad January 3, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Oh, how sad!! So sad that people can be so critical and negative! I support your decision. No need to be apart of such nonsense. I absolutely adore your blog, your writing, and your amazing style!! Look forward to what you have in store for this new year! I wish you all the best!

  • Reply m January 3, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Actually your site is the only “decorating” web-site I’ve added to my Favorites list. I enjoy your blog because it isn’t a mock “Elle Decor” site taking itself so seriously, and because you share your personal experiences as a homeowner and renovator. The downside of internet blogs is the ability of anonymous bloggers to be mean and offensive without accountability or exposure.

  • Reply mikaela January 3, 2009 at 4:06 pm

As a person working in public relations, it’s my standard policy to not engage in online “discussions” (and I using that term loosely) such as the one you described. This is true *especially* regarding those in unmoderated forums, as this particular blend of anonymity and complete lack of control naturally breeds audacity and negativity. The obnoxious bullies are the always the loudest and neediest, aren’t they?

I didn’t see the comments to which you’re referring, but I’m sorry you had such a crappy experience :-/ I agree with previous posters’ advice to either don’t read comments, or, if you do, to take them with an itty, bitty grain of salt 😉

I understand you’re decision to withdraw, though I wish you hadn’t. Although it might feel personal, the exact opposite is true: Negative commenters are responding to their own miserable little worlds, not to yours. With your hard work ethic, creativity, flair and intelligence, your blog audience will continue to grow, and there will always be more people trying to get you down. I hope you don’t let them, sister

I say hazzah to you! Keep doing what you do and I’ll keep reading. If we were friends and neighbors I’d pop right over – or invite you to my digs and brew up a fresh pot o’ tea and we could pour over the latest “World of Interiors” Keep on truckin’ baby!

  • Reply Kara January 3, 2009 at 4:56 pm

I registered on AT just so I could vote for you! I don’t normally get into these sorts of contests, but I wanted to give you my support because I love your blog! It’s too bad that some people take these things so seriously and can be so critical, as if there is one objective way to do a proper home design blog. Blogs can be approached in any way the blogger wants and that is what is so great about them. I don’t know why someone would bother taking the time to be so critical. They are probably just jealous of your diligence and writing talent to have such a great (and popular) blog and of your cool house!

  • Reply donna January 3, 2009 at 5:04 pm

Anna, if you’ve been reading AT all along you know that unfortunately, the negative comments come with the territory. If you withdraw you send the wrong message to those losers. Your supporters outweigh your detractors right? So take the high road.

  • Reply Catherine January 3, 2009 at 6:24 pm

Hi Anna- I voted for you because while I have quite different taste/style from you, I really enjoy the variety in your posts, seeing the progress you’re making in your home and reading the occasional non-home design post (eg. make up, newburgh).

While I did see some unnecessarily harsh comments, I noted that they were said by 3, maybe 4 people in total. Considering there are currently 666 votes in total, that’s a very small minority. I know you felt the need to defend yourself against these voices but really the sheer volume of votes for your blog is response enough.

Some people just need to stop smoking crack!!! Your house is amazing and your taste is flawless. Those who are haters are just plain jealous. My wife (MODsquad) showed me your blog and told me the story. As a builder of modernist homes and somewhat of a designer (and foodie), I am highly impressed with your talent and inspiration. All of the truly great designers are not copy cat artists. You think outside of the box and everything has continuity with some ingenious twists.

WELL DONE!!! As for the player haters, they can go back to K-Mart with all of the other Lemmings!

P.S. – When you get the chance, face Hyde Park for me and give a hearty salute to the C.I.A. for me (my dream to attend there).

I find my self coming back to your site because it’s the perfect mix of inspiration while my husband and I are fixing up our home – not to mention that I just came back from upstate NY to CA from the holidays (it’s nice to see what I am missing from being with my family)!

I’m glad you got nominated, I had not read your blog before and instantly it was bookmarked for me to read, I spent an entire afternoon reading your blog. I think its great and I love your sense of style. Unfortunately I have noticed from reading apartment therapy there are quite a few people that comment negatively on everything no matter what the subject is, honestly take a look at a random post, I guarantee if there is a posting about blue someone will viciously attack the color blue. There are people out there that are just negative plain and simple, do not take your name out of the running and don’t let these people take away this really cool nomination, because your blog is really, really, good. Have a great year, and I can’t wait to read your blog faithfully this year!

I’ve been lurking about your blog for a while but never commented before; I’m even late to comment here. I hope that by now you’re feeling much better but still, I wanted to add my voice of appreciation to those who are praising your blog. I enjoy reading it, looking at your beautiful photographs, admiring your taste (which is actually quite different to mine!) and your charming dogs. It’s difficult but I hope that you can focus on the large numbers of people who write to support you and forget about the few nasty comments.

Also, I wanted to say good for you for withdrawing. It’s good to remind these thoughtless people that their meanness does have consequences.

Burbled on quite enough now – good luck for the new year, I’m really looking forward to what you will be posting.

    Hey, Anna-

Just wanted to say that I agree with you. Truth be told, the tone on AT can really get nasty. I’m a fiction writer/playwright by profession and though I do blog in a few places, am not comfortable revealing my personal life on-line in part because of how nasty people can be when their identities are hidden by on-line user names.

Just know that you were nominated because many people enjoy your work and appreciate you and what you do. It’s brave to put your life up for scrutiny (not to mention that of your Evan and your very cute dogs), braver than I could ever be.

AT can be a mixed bag–some people are generous, others are looking for a fight. Just like any other situation, you can’t worry about the meanies. Just stick your tongue out, put your thumbs in your ear, wiggle your fingers and blow them a raspberry. We’ll back you up.

  • Reply Guillaume January 13, 2009 at 5:59 am
