“Entire coachloads of off-duty gas fitters from Bolton will risk death to get on the stage to try to either shake his hand, or to hug him, or to kiss him, or whatever. Almost as though they feel that, you know, some kind of ritual communion with Morrissey will enable them to contact a part of their emotions that they normally feel distanced from.”
—Michael Bracewell
Does anyone know who that is in the video giving the above quote? Thanks, Suzanne!
I’ve watched this mini-doc a number of times now, and it never fails to get me choked up.
p.s. Classic Morrissey moment at 2:55.

Love, love, love this. Strangely, I want to see what they have to say about George Michael now.
oh morrissey, the obsession of my high school self…is he so beautiful or what? seems like such a magical time looking back.
(don’t know who that other dude is.)
Oh, that voice just takes me back… Vinnie, I wonder if you are still out there.
I read the title of this post on my feed, before I saw the content. I was already humming “William Will-iam..” as I clicked. College days in a conservative school in the 80s where NO ONE was gay. Yeah right.
i think the video says a bit earlier that his name is mark simpson and he’s a morrissey biographer. at any rate, it’s a great quote.
woops, nevermind, that’s a different dude.
Hi,
I believe it is the writer Michael Bracewell in the video.
I may not be an off-duty gas fitter from Bolton, but I too have risked death to get on the stage and have a kiss. Needless to say it was absolutely divine.
Coincidentally, I am wearing my Je Suis Morrissey shirt as I write this! Yeah, also obsessed!
AHA! Michael Bracewell! Yes, I just did a Google image search and that is definitely him. Thank you so much!
I still lament the disapperance of my ‘rank’ t-shirt. Searches for a replacement (or a poster) have thus far proved fruitless.
I risked life and limb to have my photo taken outside Salford Lads Club….the local kids are scary!! x
Ahhh memories, Every day is no longer like Monday, silent and grey but I heard his new CD the other day, his charming voice is unmistakable.Almost makes me miss the angst of my youth…
Thanks for posting, this is awesome. I had tickets in ’86 to see The Smiths and they cancelled at the last moment. I was crushed.
Thank you. Such a great way to start my morning (even though I came to this a week late).
memory lane…thanks for the reminder. I saw him in Montreal in 1997, I love him, but watching that made me feel kinda old!
