I can’t believe it’s been almost a month since I made a real post. I just needed a break. I’m eternally behind on emails, projects, sleep…everything. I can’t say I’m any more caught up now than I was four weeks ago, but sometimes you just need to have one less thing to think about.
Anyway, Fritz here would like to welcome you (and me) back, and show off one of our newly reupholstered chairs. He would also like to mention that he has not chewed on the new fabric at all—not even a tiny taste.
This is one of the two chairs we bought almost two years ago (!) and “temporarily” wrapped in linen with plans to have new cushions made. It sure took us long enough, but I love the new fabric SO MUCH. We had a local upholsterer do the work. For all four cushions (two chairs), it only cost $200 for the foam to be re-wrapped and new, zippered covers made with flat seams. The fabric is a commercial-grade Maharam wool blend, which we bought at an enormous discount from Modern Fabrics. I cannot recommend them enough as a resource—excellent customer service, great prices, and a pretty amazing selection of high-end remnants.
Looks fantastic – love the fabric!
Thank goodness! Please don’t ever leave us again. We’ll be good. Promise.
Yay! Love the new blog design.
(in that order)
Welcome back! That chair is gorgeous! Love dark grey 🙂 Fritz is uber cute!!
Welcome back, we missed you a lot! There really is no substitute for your blog, it’s the best and the new design looks great.
Fritz is gorgeous!!! Has Bruno enjoyed the new chair as well?
ha! I just cliked on Shamone.
I miss him too
Thanks, guys. I’m all smiles. 🙂
Fernanda, yes, Bruno likes the chairs! He was just feeling a little camera shy today.
Welcome back! I missed your regular house updates.
The chairs look amazing.
Welcome back! Were you gone from the internet that whole time or just your blog/blog email? I have tried to take an internet break and I have failed every time…it’s terrible!
The chair looks great, I really like the grey.
Looking forward to regular D16 updates!
Love the new design/ Love the chair.
I MISSED YOU!!!!
I’ve been checking your site twice a day. So glad to see your post. Fritz looks handsome on the beautiful new upholstery.
welcome back anna!
YAAAAAAAAY! you were missed!
Welcome back! I really like the redesign and how perfectly it matches the chair and pillow. An excellent re-entrance.
yeah! welcome back! the chair looks great, love the fabric choice.
Just seconding/thirding/fourthing all the other commenters – welcome back, Anna! And love the new design, and love the chairs. It’s true – you were much missed. I felt a bit ridiculous and pouty about it: “but I *NEED* my D16 fix!” There ain’t no substitute. Good to have you in our lives again.
so happy to see that you are back! YAY!
I was worried you wandered off !
and frankly i really missed the dogs-
Beautiful! Both the chair and the new site design.
Oh, and Fritz too of course. 🙂
i adore the new layout & fritz/the chair are both lovely!.
All is right with the world again! Welcome back 🙂
Love the chair and the new blog design and Fritz… he is looking very tough on the chair!
Anna, you are my number one favorite blogger. And that’s saying something, because I read a lot of blogs. I hope you enjoyed your hiatus fully, but welcome back!! You’ve been missed!
Welcome back, Anna. I’ve missed reading your blog these last few weeks.
Welcome back! I checked the site this morning (or was it last night?) and it didn’t have the little raindrops on the top and the “Door Sixteen” was in a different font, with a little phrase beneath it — right?? Or am I just going crazy… hehe.
oh good. you were totally missed.
nice new look too. oh, and the chair is great!
Yay! So glad you’re back. Love the magenta dot!
Oooooooooo I like the new design of the blog! And that chair– beautiful! And that dog– gaaahhhhwhatalilcutiepatootie.
Wow, I had been trying to find a gray upholstery fabric just like this for a midcentury teak chair that I bought last month. Unfortunately I wasn’t finding what I wanted and got impatient and bought something else which, while I like it, I like this even more! To translate my rambling…your chair looks great (and I wish I’d seen the fabric source recommendation a little sooner!).
Hi!! I’m glad you’re posting again. You’re place is fabulous. Love the new header & the chair. Thanks for the resource.
I’m sort of a neighbor (over Beacon-ways) and have an armchair in dire need of reupholstering… do you mind posting the name of the local company you used?
Thanks so much!
Virginia, this is the place I used. They’re great!

So glad you’re back. Thanks so much for the fabric link. I’ve decided to finally bite the bullet and reupholster the sofa and chair I’ve been meaning to get to for years. I’m so happy to have a recommendation.
oh that fritz face made my day! and you posting again too!
Great job on the chair and the blog’s new look 🙂
Oooh hooray! Welcome back! Like a zillion others, I really missed you and my D16 fix.
Love the new upholstery. I have my couch done in a Maharam fabric and even after four years, not a single sign of wear and tear. Worth the $$ for sure.
Also loving the blog redesign. All fresh and squeaky clean.
The chairs look fab, as does the site design!
Glad to see you back.
really enjoying the new look, and excited for posting to return!
Good boy Fritz! Good boy!
Missed you too, Anna!
GREAT to see you back Anna ;o)
Love the chair!!! and Fritz….good dog for not having a taste on that gorgeous fabric 😀
Welcome back, and must say the chair (and the dog) looks great! I also have a couple chairs waiting to be dressed, and it’s been 5 years…Some things just end up way back in the queue of what to do..You’re sure as h…not the only one behind on things:)
Happy to see that you are blogging again and hope that break helped. Welcome back.
PS I like the new look.
I love the new look of the blog!!! And the chair looks beautiful – and yay for Fritz for not doing any damage (sigh, if only I could say same for our Lissu and her claws and some of our poor furniture!).
Glad to see you back Anna! (I was worried you and Adam were both vacationing together and never coming back)!
Welcome back from your well deserved break. Although knowing you, your schedule was still probably too full. Chair, puppy and blog look great.
So glad to see you’re back, but completely understand the need for a break.
ps…LOVE the chairs!
welcome back! you’re already inspiring me with the chair project. I should bite the bullet and get some stuff sent in to an upholsterer too!
love the new design fo the blog Anna!! 🙂
and of course, love the chair!! (Fritz is so beautiful!!, this pic could be a post card)
Beautiful chairs! Welcome back!!!
welcome back. the chair is beautiful and the dog adorable.
Welcome back! The chair(s) look beautiful!!
Wow – love your chairs. And I’m so glad that you’re back!
We recently got an older teak chair, with wool plaid cushions with the same palette as Reese’s Pieces. In other words, we’re planning on re-doing them. The foam is in decent shape, but it’s old and yellowed. I’m curious about your foam – and, generally, if you have any advice on when to keep and when to toss foam inserts.
Love love the new blog design! The chairs are amazing and the fabric choice is perfect!
I’m glad you’re back, Anna! Your blog posts have really been inspiring to me. The chair and the new site design look great!
Kristen, the upholsterer told us the foam was fine (despite being old) and didn’t need to be replaced. She just wrapped it in new batting. Replacing the foam would have doubled the cost!
Hi Anna – can I ask how many yards you needed? I have 2 chairs that desperately need to be reworked… I just need to figure our how many yards to buy! Thanks for the fabric resource!
welcome back, anna! p.s. the new site design looks great.
Yay! We missed you!
Your chair looks great! Love that grey wool – it’s the perfect color for those chairs (and little Fritz!)
welcome back! good to read you again
love the new design (and the chair)
I kept checking every two days to see if you had come back. Here’s hoping you’ve caught up a bit! I like the new design, and how you kept the raindrops.
And of course, Fritz is still adorable!
That fabric is perfect with the wood grain. And lookit the handsome boy trying it out!
So happy to see your back! Love the fabric-grey is my favorite color. Can’t wait to see more of what you’ve been doing around your house!
Welcome back! You have been missed dearly. I love the new covers for the chair, although I have to say I was quite fond of the linen wrapping … I had been trying to do the same to my free ercols!
Fritz models the new look perfectly!
Welcome back! The chair looks fab and Fritz is adorable.
Welcome back! Missed your Newburgh awesomeness.
Glad you felt comfortable taking time off; hope it was lovely. Happy to have you back.
Yay! you are back. Missed you. Missed Fritz. Give Fritz a kiss for not tasting the chairs. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome back Anna! I love the new blog design along with the fabulous chair you’ve had reupholstered! Oh and Fritz too 😀
Love, LOVE the new design of the blog! The chair looks amazing and Fritz is a cutie:)
I”m so glad that you are back, I missed your regular posts.
YAY! I’m so glad you’re back! Every time I would go through my favorite blog list I would hope that you had returned, and today you had! I so enjoy mentally stockpiling your wonderful ideas until I can actually put them into action! Plus, I have really missed the dogs as well 🙂
¡Bienvenida! Welcome back!
¡Te eché de menos! I have really missed you!
yes, add me to the list of people saying welcome back! the chair looks fantastic, as does Fritz…
I love the new look…good to have you back!
your new blog design is lovely. I’ve never taken you for a fushia girl – you always seem to like the primaries the best!
Whoops! I clicked on the wrong comment button. Anywho….welcome back! You were missed!
I certainly missed your posts. I definitely agree with the others, I love that fabric on this chair…I am going to check out Modern Fabrics!
Hi Anna. I have 2 similar chairs and I’m wondering how much fabric you needed?
wecome back! we missed you (and fritz)!
Glad to have you back! Can you show us what the full living room looks like with the new upholstered chairs?
Becky & Mia: I think the bolt of fabric is 54″ wide, and each cushion required about a yard. I would err on the side of having extra, though — plan on 3 yards for 2 cushions.
Jess: I’ll have photos soon. 🙂
I’ve fallen in love with your blog, house and city. I looked into Newburgh real estate! Amazing houses, wish I could relocate instantly.
Welcome back and love the chair!!
Glad you are back! I have been checking daily! I just bought a condo in San Francisco and am constantly inspired by your remodeling ideas. Keep them coming! I look forward to more inspiration.
I’m loving the new look & the chair!
looking GOOD around here! Love the new chair and Fritz looks just perfect sitting on it!
Glad you are back–I’ve missed the updates and the pooches.
Fritz looks just like my dog Coco! Is he a Russian toy terrier? I posted pics of them both on my blog – they could be related! http://brinylon-design.blogspot.com/
how cute 🙂
Still working on our bathroom(sigh) do you remember the color and brand of grout you used for the marble tile you did in your bath?
I loved the old design and yet I think I like this new one as much – quite a rarity for me! Glad to have you back writing and blogging!
hi. love keeping up with your blog!
did you ever post “how to easily strip old hardware”?
yours came out perfect (your window hardware) and i need lots of advice!
so glad your back anna! i have a question about the chairs. were can i find some and are they expensive?
Welcome back! Love the photo of Fritz – he’s just too cute 🙂
You were missed. great new fabric – I wish they had bolts of Maharam, though for my huge pink sectional that needs re-upholstering
Dear Anna, I have a question. A close friend of mine (I am living in Europe) is celebrating her birthday soon and I have a present on my mind which would make her go crazy … and very happy … but it is only available in America. Would you try to help me? If so, pls let me know via e.mail. Thank you so much.
can you tell me more about the floor lamp that is (partially) in the newest pic?
Hi Anna. The chair looks great, Fritz looks like captain of all he surveys. Haven’t been up to much since the store closed, but I’ve started a new web site.
It’s part design blog, part journal, part cultural commentary, part something to get me jumpstarted. I update every day!
Any chance you’d share the contact info for the upholsterer? (needed for fellow ex-brooklynite located across the river from you)
I LOVE LOVE LOVE fabric — thank you for feeding my obsession with a new fabric website. I see at least four fabrics I cannot live without on ModernFabric.
more than a hundred welcome screams 🙂 I’ll just whisper, ‘hi’, and calmly let you get used to blogging again. I love the colour of your chair, i’m looking for a three-person couch much alike.
Glad to hear you’re back, but where are you? August 3rd seems so long ago…
Also, nice floor.
I love your blog !
you are such a tease!
Are you taking another vacation?
I keep checking back everyday since you said you were back – whassup?
I keep checking back everyday since you said you were back – whassup?
I’m in withdrawal. Come back.
Okay, I feel kind of bad for Anna. The constant questions and favors and “Where are you where are you?”
She doesn’t get paid for this – it’s a hobby. Give her a break.
Julie, I think people are a little worried. She took a break and said she was back and then took a longer break. It is not like her. Anything can happen. Anyway, no pressure Ana, just hope you are well.
Hope you’ll be back again soon!
How’s your outside crown moulding doing?
Btw. If you ever feel like posting photos from the streets of Newburgh (or just the street you live on) that would be great.
hope you’re having fun! enjoy anna 🙂
cutting to the chase:
where the F are you?
no pressure /just a caring stranger
I HAVE HAD ANNA DECLARED LEGALLY DEAD.
Hope all is well….
Well, that’s the last time I go without making an “announcement” about needing more time to myself. 🙁
Beautiful chiwa and chair.
Hello Anna! I was wondering which Maharam fabric you used. It’s just what I’ve been thinking of to recover the cushions on my own chair!
Great choice on the fabric, the pillow, and obviously the doggy. 🙂
All in all, Awesomesauce!
Hey don’t sweat it. Post when you can. Lucky for us, the internet’s got lots of other stuff in it.
