Four Legs + Life + Health + Music + Movies + Books

Just happy.

Okay, enough about cameras and design and money and houses and STUFF. Sometimes you just need to watch a Mariachi band serenading a Beluga whale.

(And yes, I am putting this in the “four legs” category.)

Two fins and a flipper? 🙂

Do you think he has that song stuck in his head now? ‘Cuz I do–and it’s a nice change in tone for the afternoon. Thanks for sharing it!

YES. This is the the best + most random thing ever.

  • Reply jennifer in sf August 4, 2011 at 6:11 pm

YES. This is the best + most random thing. Who knew whales and mariachis went together so well?!

  • Reply Liz August 4, 2011 at 6:25 pm

Someone at work emailed this to me yesterday and it cracked me up haha.

  • Reply Karen @sugarspiceliving August 4, 2011 at 6:36 pm

    Love this!! so awesome.

  • Reply Jules August 4, 2011 at 7:28 pm

    Beluga whale for the win.

p.s. At the risk of tarnishing a tender moment, does that whale…release its bowels at the minute mark? I mean, not that I’m judging. I know of people who have done the same thing at a good concert.

    • Anna @ D16 August 4, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Yes, yes, I believe he does. No judgement from me, either. 😉

Belugas+Mariachi=Perfection. I was having a terrible day, then my husband sent this to me and cheered me right up!

  • Reply hannah August 4, 2011 at 7:55 pm

    I die.

  • Reply CindyE August 4, 2011 at 7:58 pm

I love whales. I think whales are probably much more evolved than humans. Side note – have any of you checked out Pinterest? I am probably behind the times – my daughter turned me on to it – love it!

    • Anna @ D16 August 4, 2011 at 8:06 pm

I like the idea of Pinterest, but I don’t like their terms of service. I also don’t like the total lack of copyright enforcement. I wish I could be more positive about it, but in practice I think it just winds up screwing many of the people who created the images that get “pinned” without their permission.

  • Reply L August 4, 2011 at 8:14 pm

Haha, the video is so adorable.

  • Reply Shilo August 4, 2011 at 8:31 pm

Ha, I nearly posted it in the “fuzzballs” category on my blog. Four legs will totally do, legs or no.

  • Reply kelly w August 4, 2011 at 10:07 pm

I’m torn. I love that the whale is so engaged, and I love the obvious affection with which the band are playing for him. But I am always so sad to see critters like this in captivity.

    • Anna @ D16 August 4, 2011 at 10:20 pm

Me too, Kelly. I just tried to convince myself that maybe he was rescued from a bad situation and can’t be released for some reason.

I guess my heart swells more for the human connection to the good in animals than for anything else when I watch this, you know?

(But I totally understand. Those were my first thoughts exactly.)

Edit: Ugh, I wish I hadn’t looked it up. 🙁 I’m going to just focus on the positive, I guess.

makes me think of the summer camp song – baby beluga in the deep blue sea, swim so wide and swim so free – dododo, i can’t remember the middle verse/line of the song, – little white whale on the go.

i’m sorry – i know my singing sucked – but thank you for putting me in a great mood 🙂

Politely disagree with you about Pinterest. The forum is about sharing. They do insist on crediting sources and have up front, easy to locate information on what to do and the PERSON to contact if you have copyright issues. I think it is a respectable site and relatively harmless. These are, for the most part, everyday people from around the world just expressing things they like… people, places, foods, projects, creativity…I think it is great. I think most of the content is very original. I would go so far to say, I think the overwhelming majority of the participates have no motives to rip anyone off – it is not even a thought. I think everyone is original and has something to contribute that is special – no one can corner the market on that. If anyone feels they cannot share freely something they create, then by all means they have the right to try and protect their work and probably should do so. Others should respect that. I understand the complex issues here and concerns. In this day and age, everything overlaps, the lines are harder to see…however, I don’t think Pinterest will be the straw that breaks the back. OK, said my piece. Now, I have to get ready for a huge sale and weekend guest…it is way too early for me. Thanks Anna – I do enjoy your blog!

    • Anna @ D16 August 5, 2011 at 6:09 am

You’re talking about the idea of Pinterest (which I also said that I like), but I’m talking about legal realities. Do you agree with their terms of service? I don’t.

That said, I have no interest in launching a diatribe again Pinterest on my blog in a post about a Mariachi band and Beluga whale, so I’ll leave it at that.

    • Nina August 5, 2011 at 6:32 am

That was a graceful reply, kudos. Thanks for posting the video, it cheered my coffee break up just wonderfully.

  • Reply Liz August 5, 2011 at 6:42 am

Thanks for sharing a smile… a nice start to a Friday!

(And sorry if I’ve posted this twice. It’s not that I thought my profound observation warranted repeating (honestly!); I had a MacAir glitch and have no idea what I’ve posted and what I haven’t. Genius bar here I come…)

  • Reply Jenny N. August 5, 2011 at 8:42 am

OMG. I want a Beluga whale. But I wouldn’t be able to serenade it. So cute, though!

  • Reply Ceci August 5, 2011 at 11:13 am

Best post EVER! I love mariachi & the whale is beautifully happy with the entertainment!

    Made my day!

  • Reply Dusa August 5, 2011 at 12:00 pm

I saw this the other day and shared it with all my coworkers. So glad you found it too! Happy little Beluga (I love how his little head butts up against the window toward the end of the video).

  • Reply Querencia August 5, 2011 at 1:05 pm

I’ll read TOS tomorrow. Today I am too busy trying to get work done and hitting replay on the netbook over and over for the cats. They are grooving on the mariachi beluga. over. and over. and over. I’m going to make an all mariachi/beluga all the time playlist for them. I give up.

    • Anna @ D16 August 5, 2011 at 3:58 pm

I think I need to play some Mariachi for the dogs and see what happens. 🙂

  • Reply Jill Browning August 5, 2011 at 1:56 pm

    Cutest thing ever!!

  • Reply alis August 5, 2011 at 3:25 pm

Seeing what a curious, smart, beautiful creature the beluga is only breaks my heart more about the fact that it’s in captivity 🙁 So sad, it should be roaming freely in the ocean, not watching a mariachi band behind glass while waiting for it’s next meal of dead fish 🙁

    • Anna @ D16 August 5, 2011 at 4:00 pm

I know, Alis. 🙁 Like I was saying to Kelly yesterday, that was the first thing I thought about—but at the same time, there’s a certain joy here for me in how the men are relating to the whale. That to me is the beautiful thing, not that the whale is “listening” to the music.

  • Reply CindyE August 5, 2011 at 8:40 pm

So long…not at all cool, snobby, done here.

    • Anna @ D16 August 5, 2011 at 9:03 pm

Sorry, Cindy, but I can’t force myself to go along with practices that I consider unethical (and illegal) for the sake of not being considered a “snob” or to be “cool”. Not my game.

    • Beth August 5, 2011 at 10:06 pm

Anna is one of the LEAST snobby bloggers out there. She goes out of her way to be fair and inclusive of everyone who comments even if she disagrees with them. You might think that makes her uncool, but that’s what makes her REAL.

    • Anna @ D16 August 5, 2011 at 10:09 pm

Thanks, Beth—but it’s OK. I don’t need everyone to like me or agree with me, and Cindy certainly doesn’t have to read a blog she doesn’t like!

    • Nina August 6, 2011 at 12:02 pm

I think it is sad that a grown woman like you cannot deal with the fact that not everyone agrees with you. Anna did not attack you as a person in any way, but rather chose to disagree with you openly – and was being very neutral about it too. You however chose to shoot below the belt and go all teenager on her by calling her something she quite clearly is not. Get a grip and be nice to people.

  • Reply Enggirl August 7, 2011 at 9:20 pm

Thanks for this. It was sooooo cute!!! Definitely put a smile on my face.

  • Reply Kelly August 15, 2011 at 8:00 pm

This was fantastic! I needed this today! Thank you so much for sharing it here so I could find it today! I am going to go watch it again! 😉
