Four Legs + Life + Health

Is it still raining?

Lots of rain = lots of sofa time = happy pups.

Yeah, it’s still raining. I think we’ve had a total of about four dry days in New York over the past three months, and it’s getting really old. We still haven’t been able to stain the deck or do much work in the garden, and although we’re scheduled to start exterior renovations on our house on Monday, it’s looking doubtful as to whether or not that’s going to be possible.

I mean, July in New York? Aren’t we supposed to be roasting under 90° temperatures with outrageous humidity right now? Shouldn’t I be lying in front of an air conditioner with a glass of chilled white wine, complaining about how my clothes are glued to my body? All I know is that it’s not supposed to 67° and raining EVERY DAY.

Okay, I’ll stop complaining now and get back to cuddling on sofa with the dogs. Sigh.

Look how cute and happy they are! How can you possibly complain! Don’t you know our happiness depends on the happiness of our animals? 😉

you got the jorun! isn’t it lovely?

we’ve been ROASTING here, its been about 100 degrees everyday and dry dry dry. exterior work is almost impossible.

I’d trade your 67 degrees and rain for the sweltering 90 degree heat and 80% humidity we have in the south west of England at the moment. My clothes are glued to me and I’m lying in front of a whirring fan (it happens too rarely for anyone to have A/C) contemplating a retro spritzer. Swap? PS Love your blog!

there has been some weird weather switch between NY & London… Wimbledon is on which usually means rain, rain, rain… and more rain. instead we’re all melting in 90° heat and humidity… uugh

loving the blanket on your sofa and your boys look cute as ever!

Here it is 101 to 106, and will continue to be so for weeks on end. I would give anything for rainy cool day. I know–no one is ever completely satisfied. But I know it’s also frustrating when you have outdoor projects to work on.

Can’t wait to see the results.

Just rescued a puppy from New Paltz and she reminds me of Fritz a little!!

  • Reply Laura July 2, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Oh, that sounds heavenly compared to the no rain and 14 days of over 100 degrees we’ve had here in Austin, Texas!

Just found your blog, FAB!!! How nice to meet someone from upstate New York I am in Millerton. I never counted the days without rain. Not that many. Your dogs have the right idea. Mine are curled up at my feet in my studio, not wanting to venture out side.
    Great article on Apartment Therapy.

I’m in nortern NJ so we’ve been having the same thing and I’m with you – the rain has got to end. Doesn’t feel like summer at all.

Just found your blog, from Apartment Therapy. Great to meet you, I am in Millerton NY, not far from you.
My dogs are curled up by my feet in my studio, not wanting to go outside. Let’s hope the sun will grace us today at some point.

Those pics look just like my house!!!

I always say as a HUGE hot weather fan that summer is over by July 4th since by then we are already on that slippery slope towards Labor Day. (BOO!) This year, it’s July 4th and summer hasn’t even STARTED here in the Northeast!!! Can the first “Back to School” sale be far off? This must end! Even the UK is enjoying 85 degree sunshine this week! 8^

    (P.S. Congrats on AT mention!!!)

hi – i love your little pupper dogs SOOO much! Fritz looks like a long haired chihuahua, but what kind of pup is Bruno? soooo so cute!

  • Reply Jane Immel July 2, 2009 at 2:45 pm

I wish you could send us some of that rain! I’m in the hill country just west of Laura in Austin..we’re in a severe drought and 100 degree heat wave! ji

  • Reply Anna July 2, 2009 at 3:09 pm

that sofa appears to be white?
did you change your mind about the grey one, or is it just a different slipcover?

sorry to hear about all that rain, that’s a real bummer!

  • Reply Ingrida July 2, 2009 at 3:36 pm

We’ve been hit with rainy cold weather here in Chicago too… it’s the 2nd of July and I’m in jeans and fleece! What’s up with that?!?!?! I too am so missing those 90 degree sunny hot summer days… especially since this past winter was so long and brutally cold!

So, is that white sofa in your photos the one that you had posted about long long ago? A find that has been sitting in your basement???

  • Reply Amanda Nicole July 2, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Awwhawwww – who could argue with little furry faces like these? We’ve been having sunny weather here in Vancouver, but it’s soooo bloody windy! It looks nice, but I’m still huddled inside because it’s cold out there.

  • Reply Jenny R July 2, 2009 at 4:50 pm

I know how you feel – I live about 30 miles south from you on the other side of the river. It SUCKS! As I’m writing this, I can hear the thunder coming in. Where did the sun go!?

  • Reply heather July 2, 2009 at 6:29 pm

I’m so sick of the rain too. Just when I start to do something, it starts raining again! But it’s really humid down here today – and hot and sticky – you’re lucky it’s not like that by you!

  • Reply Fiona July 2, 2009 at 8:58 pm

I would happily take the 100 degree weather that Austin is complaining about, but then I actually like hot weather. The rain is taking its toll on everyone psychologically.

  • Reply Suzanne July 2, 2009 at 9:12 pm

I’m in Perth, Australia, windiest city in the world. And we’ve had about a week of storms, crazy wrath-of-god type stuff where you think the roofs about to fly off (and a fair few places their roofs DID) and it’s been pretty scary.

Thing is we’re in the middle of winter. New York has no excuse whatsoever.

  • Reply Sarah B July 2, 2009 at 10:15 pm

It sound exactly like the weather we are getting in little old Tasmania. At least most of my main reno jobs are inside and I am not tempted to go out in the garden much.

Hope you get some summer soon!

It has been raining in Miami for the past three weeks. I’m so sick of it. You dogs are so cute. I live for mine.

I’m in Boston right now, and man oh man do I ever agree. Some sun, please!

  • Reply Kelly July 2, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Please send rain to Texas. There is a severe drought going on down here and the temps are in the 100’s.

It is so lovely to see how Fritz is always near Bruno, and that is for Bruno ok 🙂
In Zagreb it is raining every single day for last 4 weeks – so odd 🙁

Hi! I’m a long-time reader and love your blog. I just came across this great fabric online, and thought of you! And how appropriate: cute raindrops on a rainy day! It’s been raining like crazy up here in Montreal, too. For me, it’s meant lots of time indoors to do some sewing! I’m not sure this fabric will fit wit your color palette, but hey, it’s worth a look (and the price is right). May the sun come out where you are, and if it does, please send it north!

Yeah, I’ve been complaining about this blasted rain for weeks but then I think of my family in Austin and shut up real quick. We have been doing a lot painting over here and at first I was refusing to paint while it was raining- always heard you shouldn’t do that. But then, you know, it KEPT raining, so that little superstition went out the window. The main problem with the Hudson Valley rain is all the thunderstorms- one of the dogs can’t deal. Add in an air compressor going on and off and a nail gun… but Fritz and Bruno look look mighty relaxed. So, so jealous you are doing exterior work.

I’m sorry! I live in the West Coast and totally know the feeling of “STOP #$^%$ raining already!”
I’m doing a sun dance for you, I hope it works!
PS. Maybe this means an extended and lovely fall..?

Hey Anna – what’s up with the white sofa? I was contemplating getting the grey one from Ikea – did you find fault with it?

  • Reply Anna at D16 July 6, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Anna/Mellany: Yes, that’s a new white cover on the sofa! You have good eyes. 🙂 There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the gray one (it’s wonderful, in fact), but we recently had a couple of chairs in the living room reupholstered in a gray-brown wool fabric, and the room really needed some brightening for summertime as a result. The white covers are only $60, so it’s almost like getting a new sofa for the summer for free. 🙂 I’m sure the gray cover will make a reappearance at some point, since I’m hoping to get a second set of covers for the chairs done in a cream color before winter.

I definitely recommend the gray cover, though! Great color. Better quality fabric than the standard white issue, too.

Hi Anna – I know you use Benjamin Moore paint but I was curious as to which type Natura/Aura/Regal etc?

  • Reply ROXY MARJ July 7, 2009 at 4:20 pm

    >>> sweet

  • Reply Anna at D16 July 8, 2009 at 10:50 am

NotoriusMLE: The Natura and Aura lines didn’t exist yet when we bought our house, so the majority of the walls are painted with BM Regal Matte, which is a washable flat. The exception is the guest bedroom (just painted this past weekend – photos soon), which I painted with BM Aura Matte. All of the woodwork throughout the house is painted with BM Satin Impervo.

For primer, I exclusively use Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3.

hey anna, noticed you changed the slipvover too, and was just curious how is the karlstad holding up? is it still comfy and wearing well? we need another sofa since we bought a larger house and have a family room in addition to the living room and im insisting we get sofas with slipcovers (we have a messy 2 yr old boy) and love room and boards jasper, and like the karlstad too.
