I Want This

Hello, world’s cutest dish rack.

I haven’t been posting much recently since I’m in New York visiting my family, but I’m sneaking onto the computer while no one’s looking because I keep thinking about this blush pink dish rack. I saw it by accident a couple of weeks ago when I was looking for something else in the Food52 shop, which is how I often wind up coming across things I really don’t need but definitely want.

Have you seen the brand Yamazaki coming up all over the place recently? It’s a Japanese company that came to Brooklyn in 2014, and they make all kinds of beautifully-designed home organization products that make you feel like all it would take to change your life is putting everything you own into a powder-coated steel caddy with a wood handle. I’ll do a round-up of my favorite Yamazaki products at some point in the future, but for now, let’s talk about this dish rack!

I own it in white, and it’s delightful. I know it sounds corny to say that about a dish rack, but it really is. I don’t have a dishwasher (and I actually like washing dishes by hand), so it’s important to me to have hand-washing accessories that function well and that make me feel good about the task. One of my main gripes about other dish racks I’ve owned in the past is that they have too many parts, and that the seams where those part meet are so prone to getting grimy and mildew-y and hard to clean. The Yamazaki disk rack is just three separate components: a powder-coated steel rack with wood handles, a high-sided plastic drainage tray, and a utensil holder. So simple! Every time I empty the dish drainer I dump the water that’s collected in the tray into the sink, and the whole thing looks fresh.

Now I’m trying to convince myself that I really do not need to buy it in pink. I don’t. And I won’t. But it IS really, really cute, and maybe you need to buy it in pink. Hmmmm?

If you do, I have a tip! The only thing that I don’t like about the drainage tray that comes with the Yamazaki dish rack is that it sits flat on the countertop. If any water splashes onto the counter while you’re washing dishes (and of course it will), it’ll seep under the tray and get trapped there. Of course you can wipe it up when you dump the tray, but personally I don’t like to let water sit for too long in any spot that doesn’t get air. To solve the problem, I put one of these little clear cabinet door bumpers on each corner of the bottom of the drainage tray so it’s slightly elevated. It’s just enough to allow any water under there to evaporate, while not affecting the look of the dish rack.

Thankfully I don’t want or need a dish rack, tho I will admit that this one is quite cute. I’ve been eyeing a number of Yamazaki products but have purchased any yet. The more I think I will pare down on purchases, the harder it gets to resist lovely new STUFF!

Mainly, I wanted to say welcome back to blogging. I haven’t visited your site for some time and was thrilled to see a number of new posts.
