Four Legs + Places + Travels

Out & about.

1) No, I’m not dead!
2) Yes, I am super-duper busy.
3) Wow, it’s really hot out.
4) Indeed, I will be back soon.

In conclusion: How are you? What’s going on out there that I should know about? Can you even believe how cruddy this season of Project Runway has been? Ugh—I’m all about RuPaul’s Drag Race these days.

And another question: When you see someone out and about with a really cute dog, do you feel comfortable asking if you can pet/snorgle it? I get so shy and can never bring myself to do it.

(p.s. Spring!!!)

Yay! Cute puppy bunz! Whenever I see ANY dog while out and about, I always talk to the owners about the dog and ask if I can pet/snorgle. I have to, I just have to.

  • Reply kat April 8, 2010 at 2:03 pm

I just take a picture of it. Usually when the owner isn’t looking.

I pet the pup not the owner, so why asking for a permission?!?

  • Reply Jared April 8, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Ha! I feel the same way about Project Runway and Drag Race. As for puppies, my warring dogs have taught me one thing: look with your eyes, not your hands. Plus, I’m shy too.

girl, i hug everything with fur. go ahead. feel no shame. i just say how cute they are and then ask if i can pet them. it’s the BEST!
as for project runway, i feel you. i dig mila’s aesthetic, although i’m wondering if she’s a one trick pony. sometimes emilio’s sense of graphic print is refreshing, other times less so. but ANTHONY! i watch the whole thing for anthony. and now he’s back! i hope he gets his own spin-off show, like they did with “tabitha’s salon takeover.” he’s like a jesus- loving, african american version of carson kressley. and i love him.

cute babies i can resist; snuggling a cute pup, i cannot!

how is that guy walking 10 dogs at the same time? i can’t even walk my own 2 dogs at once…

  • Reply Mister Koji April 8, 2010 at 4:01 pm

That was a really cute post! I have enough trouble walking my one dog, but ELEVEN!? That’s admirable.

And I totally feel you Anna – I always feel way too shy to pet a cute pooch out and about. However, if I came across something as heart-meltingly-adorable as that French Bulldog pup I think I would probably just snatch it and run! Well, maybe not, but I would definitely give it a good snorgle or three.

  • Reply m April 8, 2010 at 4:34 pm

I usually ask, because sometimes the dogs are skittish or don’t like strangers and might nip. But I always do ask, because I love dogs. Like this one here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/49502978417@N01/4483422080/

oh, yes! i always, always pet the pups! I generally approach the dog while asking the owner ‘is your dog friendly’? if they say yes, i let the dog sniff the top of my hands & then pet them for as long as they’re in to it….
as a dog owner, i love when my pup gets attention when we’re out, ’cause i know how much she loves socializing so i say approach them all!
& yes, this weather is awesome!

I always live vicariously through the dogs of others! Mostly because I live in a one-bedroom grad student apartment with my boyfriend and our THREE crazy cats, the day when we can get a dog of our own is way off in the distant future.

Though that doesn’t mean that I haven’t tried to convince him that we can easily hide a french bulldog from our landlord!

#2 That little brown dog is super-duper cute.

#3 I have always stopped to pet puppies. Or old dogs. Or
middle aged. And now my kiddos do too. 🙂

i am generally shameless when i see cute animals and i just HAVE to run up touch, ooooh, awe, and nuzzle them. almost always.

  • Reply Kate April 8, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Not to sound obnoxious, but I have one of those dogs that everyone wants to pet and I don’t mind at all when people ask if they can pet him. He’s such a ham, anyway, it’s kind of hard to ignore him. I say go for it!

Thanks for posting the dog photos! The first one made me smile.

  • Reply paige April 8, 2010 at 8:30 pm

I can only snorgle when I have my own dog with me. It’s the ice breaker. But I let other people do it to my dog (even if they don’t have one with them). I think most pet people understand that their dog is generally irresistible and will draw in strangers from blocks away.

  • Reply melinda April 8, 2010 at 8:34 pm

Last time I was in NYC I saw the cutest Pomeranian in a tea shop and I had to ask if I could pet him! Normally I’m very shy about those things too, but this was seriously the cutest dog I’ve ever seen and there were lots of other strangers that did the same thing so I didn’t feel so bad. That pup was probably like ” I know I’m hot stuff, form a line people!”. Ha!

  • Reply kim April 8, 2010 at 9:00 pm

anna, i am also too shy to ask. i just stare dreamily at the dog while it passes. and yes, sometimes i even do a double take. do your dogs hang out alone at home during the day? do you hire a dog walker? i REALLY want a dog but i’m afraid that it will get bored while i’m at work…

  • Reply Suzanne April 8, 2010 at 9:28 pm

i actually think project runway has been the best season for a while. I loved Mya’s stuff, sucks she left (and man could she do makeup) and I LOVE everything Seth Aaron does. Also starting to find him attractive. hm.

Such cute pictures! New Yorkers have such lovely dogs. I used to have a pet minding business and be a dog walker when I was a teenager. I often would walk 9,10,11 dogs at the same time and people would slow their cars for a look as they drove past and ooh and ahh. I can’t help myself from squeaking when I see a lovely dog 🙂

  • Reply read me... April 9, 2010 at 3:18 am

Asking to pet a cute dog would depend on my mood… some days far too shy, others I’d be nice and bold. Can only imagine with Bruno and Fritz people are asking you all the time!! Do you mind people asking you??

    Smashing photos…

PUPPY BUTTS! I love the color of the Vizlas in the top pic. How do you feel if someone asks you to snorgle your doggieboys? I would say that would be similar to how most people would react if you asked them. Just my opinion. Thanks for making my day!

That’s one of the things I love about visiting NY, looking at all the gorgeous dogs! Lots of people have dogs in Ireland, but Dublin isn’t the kind of place where you’d see many people walking around with them, which is a shame. Someone in my apt. block has a pug though, the cutest thing ever!

So you’re still alive? So glad!!

I think it is your NY sophistication that prevents you from snuggling strange pooches. Since I am an unapologizing Tourist, I go for it every single time.

  • Reply Carrie April 9, 2010 at 8:31 am

Anna, what camera are you using for these photos? Your techy one, or small digital? The white is so balanced and I’m hoping to purchase a nice little digital sometime soon.

  • Reply Anna at D16 April 9, 2010 at 8:56 am

    @Adam: I don’t know, but I’m sure it’s a message of some sort!!

@Natasa: I always like to ask permission before petting a dog because you don’t know what issues it could have. Some dogs have problems with being pet in certain ways, or with a particular type of approach. I really think it’s the considerate thing to do. I don’t like when people (especially children) approach my dogs and start petting them without asking first. It’s amazing to me that parents let their children do that! You never know how a strange dog could react…

@katie: 11 dogs, actually! That gigantic, black furry thing under his hand is some kind of wolfhound. 🙂

@kim: The obvious solution is to get TWO dogs. 🙂

@Joe: When you feel the need to snorgle, you’ll know exactly what it is.

@jen: I am possibly the least sophisticated person alive, but thank you for saying that!! 😀

@Carrie: This is my Panasonic (Lumix DMC-TZ5) point & shoot. I’m really happy with it. I know NOTHING about proper photography and camera usage, so it must be pretty decent!

@everyone who asked: No, I don’t mind AT ALL if people ask to pet Fritz and Bruno, but I do like them to ask before touching (especially if they have kids). My shyness isn’t about the dogs, though — it’s about talking to strangers! I freeze and become mute. :

  • Reply Rachel B April 9, 2010 at 9:16 am

I ask all the time! My only rule is that I won’t disrupt a walk. If a dog and owner are just hanging out, I will introduce myself.

    Love the photos!

About the dog thing …I’m fortunate that most dogs make the first move themselves.I’m a cat owner and few dogs can resist investigating me and my interesting scent. Lots of dog snorgling!

I’m always stopping dogs on the street to say hi…. I have so many photos of French dogs in Paris…. they are the best subject matter……. I have only ever had one person not let me take a photo of their dog (and she was a crazy woman)…. we dog owners are a proud bunch and love a compliment about our four legged offspring. My dream is to do a book of dogs….. travel the world meeting every dog… how great would that be !!!!!! love this post.

  • Reply JuliaL April 12, 2010 at 8:38 pm

I think it’s rude when people, don’t ask if they can pet my dogs before they do. I would never go up and touch some one’s children or personal items before asking. For one, not all dogs are friendly. So it’s really unsafe to just go around petting dogs. My dachshund doesn’t like kids… he’s not mean and he doesn’t bite or growl or bark. He gets nervous around children. My Great Dane is super friendly and can get over excited. With her size (140lbs), she can easily knock over anyone trying to pet or play with her. When they are alone, I normally don’t have any problem letting anyone who has asked to pet them do so. However, when they are together, that’s another story. My Dane doesn’t like people petting the dachshund… that’s her dog. She can quickly become aggressive and try to protect him. I just think it’s polite to ask some. A quick, “May I pet your dog?” is courteous.

  • Reply jennifer in sf April 12, 2010 at 9:40 pm

Argh. I have an epic rant I could go into about Project Runway, so apparently I should start watching this Ru-Paul show.

I’m not so much of a dog person so I don’t really go around petting dogs. If people took their cats out it would be a different story. Also it would be total insanity, but cute.

As for petting, it is best to ask. As an owner I don’t mind and Mattie L-O-V-E-S the attention and a good belly rub for m anyone, after all she is a Lab. Puppy love, given from any dog is a great pick me up.

when my dog (he’s a chiweenie) was younger people would always just walk up and try to touch him and call him the taco bell dog- but I would always have to pull him away because he will bite. He looks cuddly and sweet- but he’s really a guard dog in a 9 lb frame! Hes’ not really mean, but he will protect me (from whatever he THINKS I need protecting from) until the day he dies. He’s over 13 now and still is in full on protecting mode.

This is the first season of Project Runway that not only did I not care about- but didn’t even bother to fully watch. Sad…
